A Homestead Meal Plan Week for Winter

Winter is one of my favorite seasons for homestead cooking. The pace slows down, the days get shorter, and the meals naturally shift toward warm, nourishing dishes that make the house feel cozy. As I’ve worked on cooking more from scratch, I’ve found that having a simple weekly meal plan makes a huge difference, especially in winter when hearty meals and warm drinks are such a comfort.

Each Friday, I sit down with my notebook and plan out the following week. I start by shopping my own homestead pantry, fridge, and freezer first. This saves both money and time, and it helps me avoid food waste. After that, I build my meals around what’s in season and what’s available locally like root vegetables, winter squash, citrus, hearty greens, and shelf-stable staples.

Below you’ll find a complete winter meal plan for the week, including a shopping list and ideas that you can easily customize for your own household. If your family doesn’t love a certain ingredient, swap it out for one of your favorites. I’ll also be adding many of my own recipes to the blog this year so you can click directly into the dishes you want to try.

Consider this a cozy winter inspiration board for your kitchen: simple, from-scratch meals that nourish body and soul through the coldest months.

Winter Meal Plan Ideas

Below is a seasonal-friendly meal plan list built around hearty, warming winter meals. Adjust quantities based on your family size. These are just ideas that hopefully inspire you when you go to create your meal plan for the week.

Monday

Dinner: Brisket
While brisket can be pricey, it is something we cherish here on the homestead. You can smoke it or stick it in the instant pot. It makes so much meat that you can freeze it or can it so that you’ll have meat to pull out on cold winter days to add to chili or reheat with a quick side.

Optional Side: Simple winter greens salad with lemon vinaigrette.

Tuesday

Dinner: Smoked Chicken Wings
You can either smoke, grill, or bake chicken wings with your favorite sauce. We eat them all year long.

Optional Add-In: Serve with corn on the cob and have a summer inspired meal in the winter.

Wednesday

Dinner: Homestead Chili Night
A cozy pot of chili using ground beef (or turkey), beans, tomatoes, spices, and onions. Let it simmer for extra depth.

Side: Cornbread or skillet bread.

Thursday

Dinner: Homemade Sloppy Joes
A simple dish you can make on those busy nights that’s hearty. You can serve it on a bun or on top of a baked potato.

Side: Homemade french fries or your favorite vegetable

Friday

Dinner: Homemade Pizza or Pizza Rolls Night
Use homemade or store-bought dough, tomato sauce, cheese, and leftover veggies or sausage.

Tip: Let everyone make their own mini pizza, kids love this!

Saturday

Dinner: Dessert for Dinner
Make a dessert with the family like cupcakes or ice cream sundaes, and that’s it! Sometimes it’s fun to live a little and surprise our loved ones.

Side: Sliced oranges or a simple fruit bowl. Make homemade nuggets in case you’re really worried about protein.

Sunday

Dinner: Instant Pot Brown Beans and Cornbread
A nourishing soup made with pinto beans, bacon and broth.

Dessert Option: Baked apples with cinnamon and maple syrup.

Final Thoughts

Winter meal planning doesn’t need to be complicated, just thoughtful, seasonal, and rooted in what you already have. Cooking from scratch becomes easier when you build a rhythm around your meals and keep simple, nourishing dishes on rotation.

I’ll continue adding more recipes to the blog throughout the year so that each meal plan can link directly to dishes you can try at home.
